Understanding Wisdom Teeth and Removals

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the final set of teeth to emerge, typically appearing in your late teens or early twenties. While some people have no issues with these late arrivals, many find that their mouths simply don’t have enough space to accommodate them.

When there isn’t enough room, wisdom teeth can push your other teeth out of alignment or become impacted, meaning they are trapped under the gum line at an angle. This can lead to persistent pain, infections, and even damage to surrounding healthy teeth.

A professional assessment by our dentists can determine if your wisdom teeth are healthy or if they should be removed to protect your smile. Book a consultation with us today.

When is Wisdom Teeth Removal Necessary?

Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed, but there are several clear warning signs that it might be time to take action. You should consider a consultation if you experience:

  • Pain or discomfort deep in the back of your mouth.
  • Swollen, tender, or bleeding gums, specifically around the molars.
  • Difficulty opening your jaw fully or discomfort while chewing.

It is often beneficial to remove these teeth early, ideally before the roots are fully formed, as this leads to a much easier and faster recovery process. Most people start developing their wisdom teeth between the ages of 17 and 25, although wisdom teeth can appear earlier or later.

Preparing for Wisdom Teeth Removal

The process begins with a thorough diagnostic evaluation. In some cases, we may be keeping an eye on your wisdom teeth through routine dental exams. In other situations, you may have noticed discomfort from your wisdom teeth and booked a dedicated appointment.

During your evaluation, we use digital X-rays to get a clear view of how your wisdom teeth are positioned beneath the surface. Our team will sit down with you to review these X-rays, explain the recommended course of action, and discuss the procedure in detail before you need to make any decisions.

During this preparation stage, we will discuss your sedation and anesthetic options during the procedure to make sure you are completely comfortable. Because of the sedation used, you will need to arrange for a ride home after the appointment. We will also provide you with specific instructions regarding any medications or foods to avoid in the hours leading up to your procedure.

Healing From Wisdom Teeth Removal

Our goal is to make your recovery as smooth as possible. After the procedure, we will provide you with thorough aftercare instructions, including a plan for pain management and recommendations for any necessary medications.

While every patient is different, you can generally expect some minor swelling and tenderness for a few days. To support proper healing, keep these tips in mind:

  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and hot drinks for at least 24 hours.
  • Eat soft foods like soup, mashed potatoes, pudding, applesauce, and smoothies during the initial healing process. Make sure the foods are not too hot or too cold.
  • Do not use a straw or eat hard, crunchy, or sticky foods until the area has healed completely, as this can disturb the healing site.
  • Follow our cleaning guide. We will provide specific instructions on how to keep the area clean and maintain your hygiene without irritating the surgical site.

If you have any questions or concerns during your recovery, our team is only a phone call away.
