What to Expect from a Teeth Whitening Treatment
Depending on your needs and preferences, you might prefer an in-office or take-home whitening treatment. In-office whitening typically involves applying a professional whitening gel, which is activated or left on for a set amount of time. Take-home kits include custom trays and gel that you use at home for gradual whitening.
All teeth are different and can respond differently to whitening treatments. Fillings, crowns, and veneers can’t be whitened during this process, but they can be replaced to match the new shade of your teeth.
What Causes Teeth Discolouration?

A teeth whitening treatment can make even more of a difference, especially when combined with healthy oral habits. Stains and discolouration can typically be categorized into 3 different types: extrinsic, intrinsic, and age-related.
Extrinsic discolouration includes stains that affect only the surface of the tooth or the tooth enamel. This typically comes from:
- Food such as red sauces or chocolate
- Beverages such as coffee, red wine, and tea
- Tobacco in the form of cigarettes or chewing tobacco
Intrinsic stains are caused by something going wrong within the tooth. These teeth often look more grey in colour. These stains can come from:
- Certain medications
- An injury to the tooth
- Tooth decay
- Excessive amounts of fluoride
- Genetics
- Certain diseases
