The symptoms of TMJ disorder are uncomfortable and can make your day-to-day living more difficult. We want to help you live a life free from jaw pain.

During a dental exam, your dentist can assess the function of your jaw to determine a treatment method that works for you. Common TMJ symptoms include a sore, tender jaw, pain when opening or closing your jaw, headaches, and neck pain. You don’t have to keep living with it. Let us help.

Schedule an appointment and talk with our team about the discomfort you’re experiencing.

Causes of TMJ Disorder

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. It’s the joint that connects your jawbone to your skull and allows your mouth to open and close. If this joint is causing you mild or severe pain, you may be experiencing the symptoms of a TMJ disorder (TMD).

Causes of TMD often include:

  • Arthritis affecting the jaw joint
  • Teeth grinding
  • Clenching your jaw muscles
  • Stress
  • Injury to your jaw
  • Irregular bite
  • Genetics

Symptoms of TMJ Disorder

If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, please contact us to schedule an appointment. Our team can recommend treatment options to help alleviate your pain and discomfort.

Common signs and symptoms of TMD include:

  • Tender jaw muscles
  • Aches in your jaw joint
  • Discomfort when chewing food
  • Struggling to open and close your mouth
  • Headaches or neck pain
  • Clicking or popping sounds when using your jaw

Treatment for TMJ Disorder

In order to recommend proper treatment, we may perform imaging to get a better view of your jaw joint and your bite alignment. Your dentist can also do a physical examination of your teeth, mouth, and jaw.

Treatments that can improve the symptoms of TMD include:

  • Relaxation techniques to become aware of clenching and grinding
  • Stretching exercises
  • Hot or cold compresses to ease tense muscles
  • Medication to reduce pain or inflammation

Your dentist may also suggest other, more hands-on treatment options depending on your needs.

If your TMJ issues are linked to bite misalignment, orthodontic treatment may help. Straightening your teeth and properly aligning your bite can relieve unnecessary stress on the jaw joint. Depending on your case, this might involve braces or clear aligners to gradually shift your teeth into a more balanced position.

A custom nightguard is often recommended if clenching or grinding during sleep is contributing to your jaw pain. These oral appliances are designed to reduce pressure on the TMJ by holding your jaw in a more relaxed position and preventing tooth damage caused by grinding.

For patients who experience chronic tension or pain due to TMJ disorder, Botox injections may offer relief. Botox works by relaxing overactive jaw muscles that contribute to clenching and grinding, helping to reduce inflammation, headaches, and muscle soreness. This minimally invasive treatment is often used alongside other therapies for the best results.

Giving back to our community is a tenet of the Shine Dental ethos. Dr. Brent Wong, owner of Shine Dental, and his wife, Wendy, began Shine The Light in 2005 as a way to bridge the gap between people who want to help and those who need it most.

Since its inception, Shine The Light has helped build over 100 homes and brings free dental and medical care to those in need in the Dominican Republic. As the organization has developed, they’ve added skilled trade training and far•o Supply Co, which focuses on strengthening economic independence for trainees and artisans in DR.
