Root Canals Can Save a Painful Tooth
Root canals are a way to help relieve pain, save your natural tooth, and improve the health of your teeth. Many patients are relieved to learn the treatment is not too different from the experience of having a cavity filled.
If you have any questions about getting a root canal or are anxious about the procedure, our friendly team is here to answer them and help ease your nerves, helping make you feel comfortable in our care.

What Is a Root Canal?
A root canal is a treatment that helps restore or save a tooth that has become inflamed or infected.
A damaged tooth or deep tooth decay can lead to infection of the pulp inside the tooth, which can result in the need for a root canal.
During a typical root canal treatment, the dentist will anesthetize (numb) the area before removing the pulp from inside the tooth. The dentist will then fill and seal the tooth and may place a crown to further protect the tooth.
Why You Might Require a Root Canal
If your dentist detects signs of infection or inflammation of the pulp inside a tooth during an exam, they may recommend a root canal as a way to fix the pain caused by the infection while preserving your tooth.
Common signs and symptoms of an infected tooth can include:
- Persistent tooth pain
- Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
- Tooth discolouration
- Inflamed gums
- A chipped or cracked tooth
- A loosened tooth
While in some cases, a tooth extraction might be warranted, we typically recommend taking action to save the tooth if at all possible. Removing a tooth can lead to the need for additional, more complex dental procedures.

Giving Back: Shine The Light Initiative

Giving back to our community is a tenet of the Shine Dental ethos. Dr. Brent Wong, owner of Shine Dental, and his wife, Wendy, began Shine The Light in 2005 as a way to bridge the gap between people who want to help and those who need it most.
Since its inception, Shine The Light has helped build over 100 homes and brings free dental and medical care to those in need in the Dominican Republic. As the organization has developed, they’ve added skilled trade training and far•o Supply Co, which focuses on strengthening economic independence for trainees and artisans in DR.
