Comprehensive Dental Care for Your Family
While dental emergencies can strike anyone, our patients who commit to regular preventive care have significantly fewer problems over time. Professional cleanings allow us to remove any buildup on your teeth to prevent cavities. Periodic dental exams from a dentist check for signs of cavities or other small problems before they progress.
When you visit us for your dental cleaning and exam, we can gently remove any plaque or tartar that can cause irreversible damage to your teeth when left undisturbed. Additionally, we use professional-strength polishing paste that gently buffs away stains and microscopic plaque, leaving your teeth ultra-smooth and shiny.

How Often Do You Need a Dentist Appointment?
Regular appointments with your dentist are important to your oral and overall health. At Shine Dental, we’ll work with you to recommend a specific dental care routine tailored to your oral health needs.
Usually, we recommend everyone have a dental exam once every year with dental cleanings every 3–6 months, depending on the patient. If you have any questions about your dental care or how often you should be booking hygiene appointments, we’re happy to answer them.
What Happens During a Dental Exam
A dental exam is completed by your dentist. It includes a more in-depth examination of your teeth, gums, and oral health, and may include X-rays.
During your dental exam, we will:
- Review your health history: Your dentist will review any changes or concerns you’ve noticed since your last visit.
- Oral examination: Your dentist will carefully assess your teeth, gums, and mouth for any signs of decay, gum disease, and other concerns. This includes an oral cancer screening.
- Digital X-rays: Our team will perform various X-rays of your teeth, such as bitewing (one side) and panoramic (full mouth), as needed. X-rays help us identify cavities and other concerns early.
- Check jaw and bite alignment: We assess the fit and alignment of your teeth and jaw to make sure nothing is causing you pain or excess wear on your teeth.
A dental exam is usually performed at the same appointment as one of your teeth cleanings.
What Happens During a Dental Cleaning
Professional dental cleanings are more than a polish and a rinse. Regular cleanings support your long-term health and help you avoid more invasive treatments down the line.
During your dental cleaning, we will:
- Review any concerns: Your hygienist will ask about any dental concerns, pain, or other symptoms you’ve noticed since your last visit.
- Scaling: Your hygienist will remove any accumulation of plaque or tartar from your teeth and along the gumline. This helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
- Polishing: Your hygienist will gently buff away stains and microscopic plaque to leave your teeth feeling smooth and shiny.
- Fluoride treatment: Your hygienist may recommend a fluoride treatment at the end of your appointment to strengthen your enamel. You’ll need to wait 30 minutes after the treatment before eating or drinking.
A dental cleaning typically takes around 1 hour.
Our Advice, Your Decision
During your dental exam, we’ll complete a form called “Risk Factors.” The purpose of the form is to educate both you and your dental care team about possible dental issues you’re at an increased risk for.
By understanding your unique dental needs, we can provide you with personalized care and specific advice to help you care for your teeth at home. This information also helps us plan treatments to provide you with effective, long-lasting solutions to save you time, toothaches, and money in future.
Our recommendations will always be focused on what we believe to be the right course of action for your long-term health, but you’ll always be in control. You’re welcome to follow these recommendations, make your own requests, and seek clarification as needed. We can also provide staggered treatments according to affordability, so you can receive the care you need.
Dental Problems We Screen For
We screen for many dental and oral health conditions during your dental exam and cleaning.
Early detection of oral health concerns can improve outcomes, reduce further complications, and help you avoid costly treatments in the future. Protecting your oral health is a group effort, combining the knowledge, experience, and care of your Shine Dental team with your home dental hygiene habits and routine appointments.
If you notice any concerns with your teeth or gums, let us know right away. We can assist you in finding the right solution.
A cavity is a very small hole that forms on the surface of a tooth. They occur when the sugars from food mix with oral bacteria, producing a mild acid that eats away at the enamel (the outer layer of the tooth). A cavity can be protected with a filling to prevent further decay.
Left untreated, a cavity can progress, becoming larger and causing pain. Eventually, this can lead to an infection requiring a root canal or a tooth extraction.
Gum disease is one of the most common dental problems experienced by adults, and can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.
Gum disease begins with plaque, a clear, sticky substance that contains bacteria and forms on your teeth daily. If plaque is not removed through brushing and flossing each day, it can harden and become tartar, which cannot be removed on your own.
Brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and booking regular dental cleanings are the most effective ways to prevent gum disease.
There are many possible causes for tooth sensitivity. During your exam, your dentist can assess your teeth and gums. If they notice signs of gum disease, damaged teeth, or teeth grinding, addressing these issues can reduce sensitivity.
Other possible causes include brushing too hard, certain teeth whitening products (particularly over-the-counter ones), plaque buildup, and certain foods. Your dentist can provide advice on how to mitigate this sensitivity.
Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep due to a blockage in the airway. Sleep apnea can cause a severe drop in blood oxygen levels throughout the night and increases the risk of heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke, and other conditions.
Many people with sleep apnea are unaware they have the condition. They may experience symptoms such as daytime sleepiness, morning headache, irritability, poor concentration or memory loss, and loud snoring noticed by partners or family members.
We provide home sleep tests for individuals who suspect that they may have sleep apnea. Treatments may involve oral appliances for mild to moderate conditions, and CPAP or BiPAP machines or surgery in moderate to severe cases. Treating sleep apnea can improve sleep quality, reduce associated health risks, and improve quality of life.
Subtle changes in the lining of your mouth call for a closer evaluation, regardless of whether you use tobacco or not. If we suspect any unusual changes in your mouth tissue, we may suggest a biopsy and microscopic analysis by a qualified lab.
Early detection of oral cancer saves many lives every year, and we’re trained to recognize a myriad of oral tissue abnormalities.
Safeguard Your Oral Health with Shine Dental
Preventive care is your first line of defence against painful dental issues. Dental hygienists carefully remove hardened plaque during your professional cleaning, targeting the buildup that brushing and flossing alone can’t touch. These routine visits help prevent gum disease, stop early tooth decay, and support long-term oral health.
At Shine Dental, we make routine dental cleanings easy and comfortable; a few visits a year can protect your teeth and gums for life. Don’t hesitate to take care of your teeth—now is your time to shine!

Giving Back: Shine The Light Initiative

Giving back to our community is a tenet of the Shine Dental ethos. Dr. Brent Wong, owner of Shine Dental, and his wife, Wendy, began Shine The Light in 2005 as a way to bridge the gap between people who want to help and those who need it most.
Since its inception, Shine The Light has helped build over 100 homes and brings free dental and medical care to those in need in the Dominican Republic. As the organization has developed, they’ve added skilled trade training and far•o Supply Co, which focuses on strengthening economic independence for trainees and artisans in DR.
